At a first glance, the DAM Explorer has some resemblance to the Asset Browser. However, it has different purposes but share functionality. While the Asset Browser is the tool to find and insert assets into content, the DAM Explorer is the tool used when working with assets.
The DAM Explorer is found in the Sitecore Taskpad:

Because the same features more or less are available in the Asset Browser, the differences are a bit subtle at first. Over time, as the road map of DAM for Sitecore unfolds, the difference will become clearer.
This is the DAM Explorer:

The DAM Explorer offers more working space because it is a full-screen application and the intended use is different from the Asset Browser. If one wants to upload several assets, crop images or change the metadata of assets, then the DAM Explorer is the go-to tool.
In later versions of DAM for Sitecore, the DAM Explorer will be extended with even more work process optimizing tools.
